Before You Start, You need a domain name and a good web hosting company that knows WordPress. We recommend you to use Bluehost because WordPress recommends it.
Now follow the below steps to transfer your blogs from WordPress.com to WordPress.org
Sign in to WordPress.com account and go to your blog’s Dashboard. Select Tools >> Export.
After this, it will ask you to choose between Free or Guided Transfer.; you have to select free only.
Now select “All Content” and press the Download Export File button. An XML file will be downloaded which contains all of your posts and other information.
Next step install word press on your web hosting. Once you have installed WordPress next is to transfer your content to your new self-hosted WordPress website.
To transfer the old content from WordPress.com to your new site, click on Tools » Import option in your self-hosted WordPress.org dashboard.
After that, It will ask you to install the WordPress Importer plugin. Install it, activate and run the importer plugin. In next screen, you will be asked to upload your WordPress.com XML file (downloaded in step 1).
Note that if your files are larger than 2MB, then there are two ways to transfer:1) asking web hosting company to increase that limit temporarily. 2) split the file by using a WXR file splitter.
Step 4: This step is only for the users who are using links features on WordPress.com
Blogroll links are transferred in OPML format. But we export are files in XML format.
WordPress.com links have an OPML file sited at an address like this:
Replace example with the subdomain. Now your OPML file can access by visiting the following URL:
Save this OPML files it to your desktop by Pressing CTRL+S (Command+S on Mac) on your computer.
Next step is to import files into self-hosted WordPress. However, this doesn’t contain a link manager enabled by default.
For that, you have to install and activate the Link Manager(https://wordpress.org/plugins/link-manager) plugin.
Upon activation, the plugin will add ‘Links’ to your WordPress admin bar.
Next Visit Tools » Import and click on Blogroll to install the OPML importer.
upload the OPML file you saved before and click import OPML file button.
WordPress now import your links and link categories from the OPML file. After completion, you will see the success message.
In the final step, you have to set your WordPress.com blog to private. If you don’t want to readdress your old users to your new site, follow this step.
Go to setting >>“I would like my blog to be private, visible only to users I choose.”
For Redirecting Visitors and Preserving SEO, Go to WordPress.com blog’s dashboard and click on Site Redirect. This upgrade provides 301 redirect which permits your site’s visitors and search engines to be automatically redirected to your new site.
